Literacy Project

Literacy Program

The Junior League of Lee County's Reading Initiative currently has volunteers at six Elementary Schools in Auburn.  Each volunteer reads with 2 students for 30 minutes each per week.  These are students chosen by the school who are behind on their reading skills.  We spend the majority of that 30 minutes reading, but may also work on spelling words, math, or whatever the teacher requests.  We try to develop a deeper relationship with these students by being involved in other ways, including taking cupcakes on their birthdays, eating lunch with them, attending school programs, etc.  Our volunteers directly touch the lives of each of these students.

In addition, JLLC donated money to 12 elementary schools in Lee County for their fall book fairs.  Each school received a $100 donation from the League.  This money was used for $10 gift certificates for students who otherwise would not be able to purchase a book.  They were able to purchase at least 2 books with the $10 certificate.  In this capacity, the League touches the lives of students throughout Lee County.

The Literacy Community Placements Committee is looking at ways to broaden our impact on the community through book collections and grants for books to be distributed throughout the county.
