23 Jan East Alabama Food Bank Weekend Backpack Program
The Weekend Backpack Program, a partnership between the Food Bank of East Alabama and the Junior League of Lee County. The program was launched on December 8, 2012. A group of thirty Wrights Mill Road students received the first bags, discretely slipped into their school bags. Each bag contained foods such as single serving macaroni and cheese, beans and franks, applesauce, cereal, milk, envelopes of hot chocolate and handwritten notes to the children to add a personal touch. The initial reaction from the children to the bags made the effort worthwhile!
The Weekend Backpack Program was a concept developed by an Arkansas school nurse who observed several students arriving at school on Monday mornings looking for food because they had not eaten well, if at all, over the weekend. Recognizing that over fifty percent of Lee County’s elementary and middle school students are on the free or reduced lunch program and half of the county’s families are “food insecure”, this presented an opportunity to make a meaningful impact here in Lee County, as well.
