23 Jan Keep Opelika Beautiful “Opelika Grows”
Funds support expansion of a program that will offer garden-based learning opportunities for K-8 students and their families. These students partner with Auburn University students to learn how to plant, grow and harvest donations to the Community Market. Programming in schools is offered each semester for 12 weeks. Funding supports the establishment of gardens at West Forest and Morris Avenue Intermediate Schools, as well as a community garden park at the Cultural Center. Extending the program will provide every Opelika City School student, grades 3-8, along with up to 80 community families and/or organizations, access to school gardens and related programming. Ideally, local hunger can be minimized and those involved develop a life-long appreciation for civic involvement. The projected number of children impacted is 2000+ through school activities and hundreds of children through produce donated to Community Market. We anticipate a contribution of 10-15 volunteers assisting the program.
